Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City collaborated with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Amazon Web Services to enhance app that positively impacts the lives of children facing adversity throughout NYC.
New York, NY, June 25, 2018 – Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of New York City – the nation’s oldest and one of New York’s largest youth mentoring organizations – today announced a collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance the organization’s first-ever mobile application, which serves as a tool for volunteer mentors to help underserved youth overcome barriers and succeed.
“As a mentor, one of the challenges you face when planning a new outing with your Little Brother or Sister is coming up with creative and affordable ideas. The GoBig App that we’ve developed in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Amazon Web Services allows our mentors to select meaningful outings that will ultimately help their Littles to achieve their goals,” said Hector Batista, Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. “This will improve the quality and variety of outings between Bigs and their Littles going forward, and ultimately help us achieve our mission of changing children’s lives for the better.”
The app, which first launched in 2017, is designed to create a vehicle for regular communication between the organization’s volunteers and social workers, and ultimately help young people overcome challenges, improve in their academics, develop self-confidence and achieve their full potential. Through the app, BBBS of NYC has access to tangible results and updates that enable the youth mentoring organization to successfully provide timely assistance and deeper support to each individual match. HPE’s Pointnext cloud services team collaborated with AWS to develop enhancements for BBBS of NYC’s mobile application.
“At HPE, each employee receives 60 hours of paid time a year to volunteer with a charity of their choosing,” said Bruce Coughlin, VP Global Practice of HPE. “When we were presented with the unique opportunity to work with AWS to deliver a powerful application that would improve communities and make the world a better place, we knew we wanted to be involved.”
As for the technology behind the GoBig App, BBBS and HPE turned to AWS to provide the cloud-based infrastructure.
“AWS is excited to be the foundation for BBBS of NYC building and innovating for the future,” said Neil Meulener, Enterprise Sales Director, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “Empowering Bigs to help their Littles by providing mobile capabilities and collaborative tools is the first step in what will hopefully be a powerful and impactful collaboration.”
The GoBig application is currently only available in New York, but plans are already in motion to scale the application across the US.
BBBS of NYC serves more than 5,500 young people in New York City each year through a variety of specialized mentoring programs. For more information on Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC or to volunteer, please visit www.bigsnyc.org.
About Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City
Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC (BBBS of NYC), the nation’s oldest and one of NYC’s largest youth mentoring organizations, has served the changing needs of New York City’s most at-risk youth since 1904. The volunteer- and donor-based organization offers a variety of specialized mentoring programs to help children facing more complex challenges – including immigrant youth, children of incarcerated parents and those in foster care – as well as the Workplace Mentoring Program, which helps businesses throughout New York City positively impact the lives of young people and build a foundation for professional success. Additionally, since 1992 BBBS of NYC has worked through its Center for Training and Professional Development to equip non-profit professionals throughout New York City to develop and enhance their own mentor-based programs and organizations.
Through the support of individuals, foundations and corporations, this not-for-profit agency has been able to change the lives of the city’s most disadvantaged children, matching them with caring adult role models – dependable friends who can help to expand their horizons, realize their potential and enrich their futures. All contributions enable BBBS of NYC to continue to foster current match relationships and also provide more New York City children with life-changing mentors. Approximately $3,500 funds the establishment of a new one-on-one match relationship for one year. To learn more, become a mentor, donate and/or offer support, please visit www.bigsnyc.org.
